Catholic Messenger Update

So far, out of 1700 households, St. Mary’s has received 255 subscriptions to The Catholic Messenger. If you have not yet subscribed, you may place your check for $25 (or whatever you can give) in the collection basket at Mass, or mail it to the church office at 302 E. Jefferson Street, Iowa City, Iowa 52245. Make the check payable to The Catholic Messenger/St. Mary’s. Thank you.

A Call to the Priesthood

The Church is in great need of dedicated, capable, and holy priests. If you know a young man who, in your opinion, would make a good priest, please send his name and address to Fr. Ken or Fr. Jeff.

Many priests today (including Fr. Ken and Fr. Jeff) say that they first thought about a vocation to the priesthood after someone suggested it to them. God may be using you to extend His call to a future priest. Please give this your serious thought and prayerful consideration.

Inquiry Sessions

Inquiry Sessions for adults wanting to join the Catholic church or learn more about the Catholic faith will be held on Tuesday, February 21st, and Thursday, February 23rd, from 7-8 PM. We will also have a session on Sunday, February 19th, from 11AM to noon. All sessions will be held in the rectory. Inquiry Sessions are for those baptized in another Christian faith, for the unbaptized, and for adult Catholics who were never confirmed. It is an informal opportunity to find out more about the Adult Initiation process at St. Mary’s. Each session is the same, so you only need to attend one session.

Altar & Rosary Society

St. Mary’s Altar & Rosary Society will hold its regular meeting this Tuesday, February 21st, at 6:30 PM in the parish hall.

First Eucharist Meeting

There will be a meeting for children preparing for First Eucharist and their parents on February 23rd, at 6:30 PM in the parish hall.

Pantry Sunday

Thank you for the 155 pounds of food and supplies contributed to the Crisis Center in January! Next weekend, February 25th-26th, is once again Pantry Sunday. The Crisis Center is in need of canned fruits, vegetables, and meats, peanut butter, potato, rice and pasta products, cooking oil, juice, baby formula, wipes and diapers, paper and sanitary products, hygiene products, and clean plastic grocery sacks. Place your donations in the southeast corner of the parish hall.

St. Mary's/First United Methodist

Pot Luck Supper

Our annual potluck supper with our neighbors from First United Methodist Church will be held Sunday, February 26th, at 5 PM. We are the hosts for the evening this year. Please bring your own table setting, a meat dish and one other dish to share. Our Children's Choir will provide the entertainment. There is always great food and conversation!

"Hey, Mom!"

How many times a day do you hear that? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed? The MOMS series examines the dynamics of motherhood as they apply to you, focusing on self-acceptance, spirituality, feelings, personal growth, and friendships. During the season of Lent, St. Mary's will again be hosting the MOMS series every Friday beginning March 3rd, from 1:30-2:30 PM in the parish hall. All moms regardless of their parish or church affiliation are welcome to come and explore their role as a mother at a deeper level. To register, come to a brief session on February 28th, at 1:30 PM, or contact Michaela Dietrich at 665-8608 or Kathy Weiss at 351-0963.

Young Married and Engaged Catholic Adults

Would you like to get together with other couples, support each other through life events, and pray together? We invite you to join us on Sunday, March 5th, at 5 PM in St. Mary's parish hall. We will do introductions and then eat at a restaurant of the group's choice. For more information please contact Jason and Jennifer at 341-8566 or email them at jasonandjenniferrenk@yahoo.com.

A Thought: Have you taken any time lately to think about how truly good God has been to you? He may not have to cure paralysis if He has already given you the gift of mobility. But do we glorify and thank Him for such simple gifts as sight, speech and general health? Do we give back to God in proportion to all the many blessings He has given to us?

Choose Life Prayer - We pray for those who have been involved with abortion either as a provider or as a patient, that they may realize a forgiving God is always near.

Vocation View - What is more amazing, the ability to heal, or the gift to forgive sins? Consider being an instrument of God's forgiveness through the ministry of priesthood.
