Catholic Messenger Update

So far, out of 1700 households, St. Mary’s has received 255 subscriptions to The Catholic Messenger. If you have not yet subscribed, you may place your check for $25 (or whatever you can give) in the collection basket at Mass, or mail it to the church office at 302 E. Jefferson Street, Iowa City, Iowa 52245. Make the check payable to The Catholic Messenger/St. Mary’s. Thank you.

A Call to the Priesthood

The Church is in great need of dedicated, capable, and holy priests. If you know a young man who, in your opinion, would make a good priest, please send his name and address to Fr. Ken or Fr. Jeff.

Many priests today (including Fr. Ken and Fr. Jeff) say that they first thought about a vocation to the priesthood after someone suggested it to them. God may be using you to extend His call to a future priest. Please give this your serious thought and prayerful consideration.

St. Anthony’s Bread

In January 2006, St. Anthony’s Bread assisted 54 different families or individuals. Partial rent, utilities or water was paid for 34 households. Several of our recipients needed assistance due to illness or disability. We made partial payment for medication for four people and arranged for an eye exam for a refugee. We paid a portion of car repair for two working individuals and a portion of a bus fare for a homeless person. We purchased a minimal cell phone plan for a woman at DVIP so she could be in contact with her child who was seriously ill in another city. It is your friendship to the poor that makes our work possible. Thank you.

Lent 2006

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is our time to respond to the church’s call to repentance and spiritual conversion. The traditional penances of Lent are prayer, fasting (self-denial), and almsgiving (works of charity). Ash Wednesday is a day of fast and abstinence. Everyone 18 years of age through age 59 is bound to fast on this day. One full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together should not equal one full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices, are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. Everyone age 14 years of age or older is bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. Ash Wednesday Mass here at St. Mary’s will be at 12:10 PM and 7 PM. Also, please plan to join us every Friday evening during Lent for Stations of the Cross and Benediction, beginning at 6 PM and Taize Prayer every Sunday beginning at 5 PM. These are excellent ways to help us enter into the spirit of prayerfulness which is so important during the Lenten season.

A Thought: St. Paul reminds us that we cannot take credit for anything we have. It is only because God has blessed us with many talents and gifts that we have what we do today. So we must ask ourselves: What does He want from me in return?

Choose Life Prayer - We pray for those involved in the struggle to protect all human lives, that they may turn to God for strength and sustenance.

Vocation View - In fidelity and love, God binds us to himself. Listen to God’s voice. Are you being called to the servant-leadership of ordained or vowed ministry?
